L'ouvrage est une approche historique de la mécanique quantique et il en présente les fondements. Il amènera tout lecteur muni simplement de prérequis correspondant à un DEUG scientifique ou un enseignement de classe préparatoire, à une compréhension de la physique atomique et moléculaire. Le langage utilisé est celui du physicien, mais les développements mathématiques sont effectués de manière explicite et détaillée. Tous les calculs théoriques, comme par exemple la résolution de l'équation de Schrödinger, sont menés en mettant en avant les contraintes physiques imposées au système, c'est à dire en cherchant des solutions physiques et non seulement purement mathématiques. Après un exposé des notions mathématiques spécifiques nécessaires, l'essentiel du texte est consacré à des applications pratiques dans les domaines de la physique atomique et la physique du solide. Ainsi, les thèmes traités sont en relation avec l'électromagnétisme (paquet d'onde gaussien, effet Stark), les vibrations électroniques (oscillateurs harmonique et anharmonique), la physique du solide (effet tunnel, électrons libres et théorie de Drude, modèle de Kronig-Penney pour les cristaux conducteurs, isolants, semi-conducteurs), la relativité (spin), la physique et la chimie théoriques (orbitales atomiques, spin, tableau de Mendéleïev), la théorie des champs.
