|The purpose of this book is to provide a rationale, theoretical foundations, and general guidelines for implementing multicultural feminist theories and pedagogies in psychology and related disciplines. The major goals are to summarize varied theoretical perspectives on social justice education, suggest general guidelines for integrating theories of pedagogy, and discuss the challenges and rewards of teaching from multicultural and feminist frameworks. The editors use the phrase social justice in the title of this book to highlight the importance of infusing scholarship and practice relevant to diversity in both the process and the content of education. More specifically, social justice in education includes (a) centralizing and affirming the perspectives of those whose experiences have been marginalized or ignored, (b) transforming the manner in which education occurs such that power differences are minimized and the empowerment of learners and educators is optimized, (c) working toward the full and equal participation of all learners, and (d) rethinking the institutional structures in which learning occurs. The book also summarizes how various frameworks construe issues of diversity, identifies the contributions of each, and discusses common as well as divergent implications and strategies. The first objective, then, is to provide readers with tools for creating multicultural feminist pedagogies. A second goal is to help psychologists and educators integrate theory and practice. A third goal of this book is to bring the literature of pedagogy, particularly pedagogy about diversity, to psychology. Overall, the volume is divided into two sections that address both theoretical and application aspects of multicultural and feminist pedagogies|--Preface. The Complex Web of Inequality in North American Schools PDF By:Gilberto Q. Conchas,Briana M. Hinga,Miguel N. Abad,Kris D. Gutierrez Published on 2019-08-22 by Routledge The Complex Web of Inequality in North American Schools analyzes and challenges the critical gaps and inequalities that persist in the American school system. Showing how historical biases have been inherited in current polices relating to non-dominant youth, the text calls for educational reforms that perform in the name of social justice. This edited collection carefully interrogates how technocratic educational policies and reforms are often unequipped to address the interplay of political, social, economic, ideological factors that are at the roots of educational injustice. Considering the most vulnerable student populations, original case studies explore how inadequate structures, practices, and beliefs have increased marginalization, and highlight those instances in which policy has proved effective in reducing op...

Teaching, Affirming, and Recognizing Trans and Gender Creative Youth PDF By:sj Miller Published on 2016-06-21 by Springer Winner of the 2018 Outstanding Book by the Michigan Council Teachers of English Winner of the 2017 AERA Division K (Teaching and Teacher Education) Exemplary Research Award This book draws upon a queer literacy framework to map out examples for teaching literacy across pre-K-12 schooling. To date, there are no comprehensive Pre-K-12 texts for literacy teacher educators and theorists to use to show successful models of how practicing classroom teachers affirm differential (a)gender bodied realities across curriculum and schooling practices. This book aims to highlight how these enactments can be made readily conscious to teachers as a reminder that gender normativity has established violent and unstable social and educational climates for the millennial generation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, (a)gender/(a)sexual, gender creative, and questioning ...
